Spain Student Visa
For non-EU nationals pursuing higher education, training, or volunteering activities in Spain.
For: International students, trainees, volunteers, and participants in student mobility programmes.Estimated Timeline
1-3 months
The Application Process
Step by step, from start to approval.
Programme Acceptance
Secure formal acceptance from a recognised Spanish institution: a university, vocational training (formación profesional), language school, or research centre. The programme must be full-time, leading to an officially accredited qualification or a structured course of at least 20 hours per week.
- Acceptance letter must state the programme name, start and end dates, total hours per week, and confirmed enrolment.
- For research stays, an Acuerdo de Acogida (hosting agreement) replaces the standard acceptance letter.
- Apostilled and sworn-translated copies of prior academic qualifications are usually required.
- Programmes shorter than 6 months use a short-stay study visa instead, which doesn't grant residence.
Financial Documentation
You must demonstrate that you can support yourself for the entire stay. Spain uses IPREM as the benchmark: 100% for the student, 75% for the first family member joining, and 50% for each additional member.
- 100% IPREM is around €600 per month, so a 9-month academic year requires roughly €5,400 in available funds for the student alone.
- Acceptable proofs include bank statements (last 3 to 6 months), scholarship letters, signed parental support letters with the parent's bank statements, or a combination.
- Self-funded students benefit from a clear paper trail: large recent transfers can trigger requests for evidence of origin.
- Comprehensive private health insurance from a Spanish-licensed provider, with full coverage and no copays, is required for stays over 6 months.
Visa Application
Apply at the Spanish consulate that covers your area of residence at least 90 days before your programme starts. Many consulates open dedicated student-season slots from May through September.
- Submit the national visa form, the acceptance letter, financial proof, health insurance, criminal-record certificate (over 18s), medical certificate, and accommodation evidence.
- Government fee is approximately €80, plus a roughly €60 service fee at consulates that use a visa centre (TLS, BLS, VFS).
- Decisions are typically issued within 1 month, but high-demand posts (US, India, Latin America) can take up to 8 weeks.
- Under the Startups Law, students enrolled in higher education and research roles can also apply directly inside Spain through UGE-CE.
Arrival & Registration
Enter Spain within the 90-day visa window. If your programme is over 6 months, you must obtain a student TIE within 30 days of arrival from the National Police; for programmes under 6 months, the visa itself covers your stay.
- Register at the town hall (empadronamiento) before booking the police appointment. You'll need a rental contract, residence-hall letter, or written authorisation from the host.
- Bring passport, fee receipt (Modelo 790-012), a passport-style photo, and the original visa to the appointment.
- Student TIE allows up to 30 hours of part-time work per week, provided it doesn't conflict with your study schedule. The Startups Law lets postgraduate students work full-time.
- After 3 years on a student permit, you can switch to a work or self-employed permit through UGE-CE without leaving Spain.
