Combine work with the Greek island lifestyle for up to two years.

For: Remote workers from outside the EU.

Estimated Timeline

2-3 months

The Application Process

Step by step, from start to approval.

1

Visa Application

Submit your application at the Greek consulate covering your country of residence. The Type-D visa is the long-stay entry that allows you to enter Greece and apply for the residence permit on arrival.

  • Required documents: passport, employment or freelance contract with a non-Greek employer or clients, last 3 months of payslips or invoices, bank statements, apostilled criminal-record certificate, and health insurance valid in Greece.
  • Income evidence must show at least €3,500 net per month, +20% for a spouse, +15% per child.
  • Consular fee is approximately €75, plus a service fee where the consulate uses an external visa centre.
  • Decisions are typically issued within 10 working days under the legal deadline, though some posts run longer in practice.
2

Travel to Greece

The Type-D visa is valid for up to 12 months and allows multiple entries. You travel to Greece and have time to settle: open a bank account, sign a long-term lease, and obtain a Greek tax number (AFM).

  • AFM is issued by the local tax office (DOY) on presentation of passport, visa, and proof of address. The procedure usually takes a single visit.
  • Open a Greek bank account: most banks require AFM, residence visa, and a recent utility bill or rental contract.
  • Sign a long-term lease (12 months minimum) and register it through the AADE platform. The registration certificate is needed for the residence-permit application.
  • If you want family to join, they should arrive on the same Type-D visa or apply separately for family-reunification stamps.
3

Biometric Appointment

Apply for the residence permit at the Decentralised Administration of Attica (Athens) or the regional immigration office where you live. You provide biometric data and submit the original civil and financial documents.

  • Application fee is approximately €1,000 for the main applicant, €150 per dependent.
  • Health insurance must be from a Greek-licensed insurer (or have an approved foreign provider with full Greek coverage). EHIC and travel insurance do not qualify.
  • Once you file, you receive a 'blue card' provisional document allowing legal stay until the permanent card is issued.
  • Processing typically takes 4 to 8 weeks for the first card.
4

Residency Card

The 2-year residence permit is delivered as a physical card you collect from the immigration office. It's specifically tied to digital-nomad status, but allows visa-free travel across the Schengen Area.

  • Renewals require continued income above the threshold and ongoing residence in Greece. Long absences without justification can affect renewal.
  • Tax residency in Greece kicks in after 183 days of physical presence per calendar year. Most nomad applicants become Greek tax residents and can apply for the 50% income-tax exemption available to inbound workers for the first 7 years.
  • After 5 years of legal residence, you can apply for an EU long-term residence permit. Citizenship requires 7 years (or 3 if married to a Greek citizen) plus B1 Greek language.
  • Family members included in the file receive their own cards on the same renewal cycle.
